Maintenance Dredging, Round Cove Channel, Harwich, MA
About this project:
The Town of Harwich engaged the services of Coastal Engineering to oversee the permitting process for the town’s maintenance dredging operations in Round Cove channel. Part of this permit approval process involved coordinating efforts with the Barnstable County dredge program – and working with the neighboring Wequassett Inn Resort to apply for and obtain the necessary permits to dredge the harbor and then use the dredge spoils to re-nourish beach areas where winter storms had all but removed the existing dunes. Because the project was in an Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC), extensive environmental permitting was required through local, county, state, and federal regulatory agencies. This joint effort was a true public/private partnership to provide protection for a public mooring basin while restoring and re-nourishing both the Town’s public beaches and the Inn’s private beachfront areas along the cove.
Coastal Engineering's services included:
- Design of dune beach system
- Field topographic survey and layout of dredge containment area
- Dredge area calculations, and beach profile design and volumes
- Field sampling of representative dredge spoils for grain size
- Preparation of permitting plans and applications
- Environmental permitting services at the local, state, county, and federal levels
- Implementation of a long-term monitoring program for future beach nourishment.
